UnrivalledI’ve worn out a few copies having used this book almost forty years, and it’s far and away the best version of the I Ching for the modern Western explorer of this extraordinary ancient Chinese oracle. How can throwing three coins six times yield advice of such depth and precision, as though your best friend was over your shoulder? But it does. It is a challenge to the Western materialist mindset, and deserves wide investigation. Its ‘workbook’ layout is useful too.

Thorough, leading to answers, Practical to useThis workbook is really well presented. The Introduction is about understanding the Tao, Yin Yang and of course, the trigrams that form the hexagrams. To be the book of change, you need to understand what changes, and indeed the different lines composing the trigrams represent an original situation which applies to the several attributes of the trigrams. The attributes go from the general say, heaven, sky, day, to the particular say, head, mind.Youv’e got an explanation how to proceed to draw your oracle, how to deal with changing lines and the interpretations of the 64 Hexagrams. What I do is to think of the problem question very carefully. I am throwing the coins and note the lines – the how to do this is explained in detail. Then you turn to the right hexagram for the interpretation. It is remarkable that the “answer” will make you think deeply. There’s no glib answer. An example is no 58 TUI, ENCOURAGING.It starts by “The time has come when you can achieve your aims through the encouragement of others” It’s got an A4 writing developing the theme of encouragement, through discussion with friends and so on. There is so much that you are not left on your own. Plus the fact that this is only one hexagram. You then need also to consider the changing lines and pass to the leading hexagram from the changing lines. It makes for a fascinating study of your situation which is, never forget, ever changing!Best explanatory workbook with all you need to understand the I Ching. Well worth the buy.
